Photos: Joan Belmar's "Migrations" at the Chilean Embassy - Last Week to Enjoy!

20091013-migrations-039

Cross-posted at ReadysetDC: A Creative Urban Enterprise

Joan Belmar is a wonderful local artist that you should know about. He is represented by Nevin Kelly Gallery and funded by the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities. This week is your last chance to enjoy his mini-retrospective at the Chilean Embassy, featuring works from 1995 to present. Dubbed "Migrations," the exhibition is a good opportunity to inspect the way in which Joan's work has matured: from his earlier mixed-media techniques to his current signature style and the elements that connect them.

I had the privilege to attend the "Migrations" opening reception at the Chilean Embassy earlier this month, a cultural event attended by celebrities and friends alike. Cristian Campos, a famous Chilean actor, was present with his wife actress Maria Jose Prieto (see this YouTube clip, where Cristian looks pretty badass). Also at the opening was Charles Krause, survivor of the Guyana Massacre and an avid art collector and journalist (see this PBS link).

Many friends and supporters praised Joan at the reception, including Jim & Minna N Nathanson, Barbara Liotta, Elaine Reuben, Constance Bergfors, Eve Hennessa, Shanti Norris (Executive Director at Smith Farm Center for Healing and the Arts), Ellyn Weiss, Sondra Arkin, Mikray Pida, Katya Romero, Humberto Fuentes  (Manuel Zapata Olivella Center), Victoria Montero and Alejandra Ruiz-dana.

Photos: Joe's Super Terrific Happy Hour with AU's School of International Service (SIS) Meetup

Missed Doris on account of her new schedule at the Post. She is keeping busy and motivated after her recent return from the AAJA conference, where she spoke and got re-elected! I met fun new people (AU SIS folks there), including a super smart dietician. Co-worker Nikki from US News makes a nice and unexpected appearance.

Refresh DC slides on HTML5/CSS3. Spotlight on Justin Thorp: why you should follow this web tech personality

Html5-css3

View the presentation slides (courtesy of Jason Garber and M. Jackson Wilkinson -- see my photo recap of this month's event).

Refresh DC (website / twitter) is a unique event that gathers super talented professionals from all walks of web life for monthly talks and happy hour. Some of the best designers, developers, and social media pros form this energetic and impassioned community.

One of my favorite pals from my old days at Refresh DC is Justin Thorp, a true connector and web evangelist (pictured left). He works as a community manager at Clearspring. Check out his blog, where he discusses human behavior as it relates to online communities and web trends generally. His blog posts are insightful and authoritative. He is humble and often initiates great dialogue. You can follow him on Twitter.

More Refresh DC personalities here.

You're awesome! Finally Friday! :)

Photo

One of our neighbors left piles of old magazines, from the New Yorker to Esquire to Money and BusinessWeek. What's great about these issues is that they are from 2006/2007/2008 -- I didn't think people kept their issues around this long! Yes, I grabbed a couple of them... you must know it's fun to inspect the past with present-day glasses.

You are awesome, friends. Thanks for reading and happy friday!

If you are on Twitter, don't forget to #followfriday (huh? more here). Not on Twitter yet? Here's a guide.

On giving back to your alma mater

Thank-you

I didn't give much to Dickinson College's First in America campaign, but the care and attention the college gives to alumni make me want to give more. I received a warm, personalized email from a staff member a few months back when I made my small donation. Today: another thank you email.

I met some of the most caring and committed people while working at Georgetown University's Advancement Office. I have a better understanding of how important and essential alumni operations are to the furthering of a school's identity and strength.

Dickinson alum and development staffer at Yale University, Michael Henry, deserves recognition for prompting me to take action. Thanks, Michael!
